Backup with HTTP basic Authentification (.htaccess)

Backup with HTTP basic Authentification (.htaccess)

Backup with HTTP basic Authentification (.htaccess)
Sometimes it』s useful to share several files or whole directories only with a specific group of people. Therefore many web hosters offer a very effective protection with only little effort: The file 「.htaccess」.
This file allows to add a password protection to directories or files. The difference to other passwords is that this password exists in a coded form. Due to that it is, compared to other methods, more difficult to be read. In case someone wants to get access to a file or a directory protected in this way, the user needs to enter a user name and a code word.
In case you protect your blog with a http basic authentification (.htaccess) or use a plugin saving the wp-cron.php, you will get the following error message when you create a backup with BackWPup:
Nicht erwartete HTTP-Antwort:
Status-Code: 401
Date: Fri, 30 Sep 2017 10:05:54 GMT
Server: Apache
Www-authenticate: Basic realm="Testsystem"
Content-length: 401
Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
Inhalt: 401 Authorization Required This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.
Follow these steps to be able to create a backup with http basic authentification with BackWPup:

Navigate to BackWPup → Settings → Network.
Choose Basic Auth, enter your .htaccess user and the password and click save changes.

How to save backups to a folder
If you want to easily store your backups to the FTP server, you can save the backups to a folder in your WordPress installation. In this case, you don』t even need to enter FTP credentials, like for the backup destination FTP.
Important: When speaking of folder here, it is not a folder on your computer. It is a folder on your FTP server, where your WordPress installation is located.
Follow these steps to set up the backup destination in a folder:

Edit the backup job: go to the tab General, the section Job Destination and check the Backup to Folder checkbox.
Edit the backup job
A new tab To: Folder appears. Go to this tab.
Edit the backup folder settings
At Folder to store backups in, enter a name for the folder where the backups are going to be stored. This folder will be located inside the wp-content folder of your WordPress installation.
At File Deletion, enter a number which will be the maximum amount of backups to be stored there. If this number is reached, the oldest backups will be deleted.
Do a test run by manually starting the backup job. After a successful run, you should see a backup in the specified folder.

Clicking one of the buttons will forward you to the Dropbox site, where you are asked to allow your site access to Dropbox. Click on Allow here.
Access to Dropbox
On the next page, a code is displayed.

Copy the code and paste it to the field next to the button you have clicked on before on the job settings page. Then click on Save changes at the bottom. BackWPup should now show you that it is successfully connected to Dropbox.

In the File Deletion field you can set the maximum number of backups, which will be stored in Dropbox. This saves you space on your Dropbox. If the maximum number is reached, the oldest backup will be deleted.
To check if the Dropbox setup is working correctly, start a backup job with Dropbox as job destination. If the job is done, you should see the backup file in your Dropbox.

How to save backups to your FTP server

How to save backups to your FTP server

How to save backups to your FTP server
You can save your backups to any FTP server you have access to. It can be another server than the one your WordPress is running on. The only requirement is that the FTP functions of PHP are enabled on that server.
Please note: in the backup job, under the tab General you will find the section Backup File Creation. The Backup type has two options: Synchronize file by file to destination and Create a backup archive. When using an FTP server for your backups, it is not possible to use synchronization of files.
To use an FTP server as backup destination, follow these steps:

At job creation or when editing the job, in the tab General, section Job Destination, choose Backup to FTP.
At job creation, in the tab General
A new tab To: FTP appears. Go to this tab.
A new tab To FTP appears Go to this tab
At the top, enter the FTP credentials for the destination. You can get these from your host.
Under Backup settings you choose the folder where to store the backups. Also, choose the amount of backups to be kept in that folder. If this amount is exceeded, the oldest backup will be deleted. If you don』t want to delete any backups, enter 0 in this field.
In the section FTP specific sections you can configure the FTP connection accurately:

Timeout for FTP connection: in seconds. Specifies how long the script waits to connect to the server before cancelling the connection.
SSL-FTP-connection: uses a secure connection. OpenSSL must be supported by PHP to use this.
FTP passive mode: we recommend to have this box checked. It jumps in when a firewall is used. If you want to learn more about the FTP passive mode, read the Wikipedia article File Transfer Protocol.

Test the backup job by running it manually. After it finished successfully, you should see the backup on the FTP server in the specified folder.
