How to save backups to a folder

How to save backups to a folder

How to save backups to a folder
If you want to easily store your backups to the FTP server, you can save the backups to a folder in your WordPress installation. In this case, you don』t even need to enter FTP credentials, like for the backup destination FTP.
Important: When speaking of folder here, it is not a folder on your computer. It is a folder on your FTP server, where your WordPress installation is located.
Follow these steps to set up the backup destination in a folder:

Edit the backup job: go to the tab General, the section Job Destination and check the Backup to Folder checkbox.
Edit the backup job
A new tab To: Folder appears. Go to this tab.
Edit the backup folder settings
At Folder to store backups in, enter a name for the folder where the backups are going to be stored. This folder will be located inside the wp-content folder of your WordPress installation.
At File Deletion, enter a number which will be the maximum amount of backups to be stored there. If this number is reached, the oldest backups will be deleted.
Do a test run by manually starting the backup job. After a successful run, you should see a backup in the specified folder.

Why a BackWPup Restore stand-alone App?

Why a BackWPup Restore stand-alone App?

Why a BackWPup Restore stand-alone App?
This article explains why we decided to build a BackWPup restore stand-alone app besides to an integration into BackWPup. We discussed this in our team and finally settled with this decision because of vary reasons.

The worst-case is covered
Imagine the worst-case: Your WordPress site does not show anything. We call that 「White-Screen of Death」. If your not able to log in to see the backend, you』re not able to use a restore feature within BackWPup. Using a stand-alone app can help in this situation.

Easier to develop such a new feature
This is our first attempt to build a restore feature and we』re as excited as you. However, developing such a new feature is not always easy. Using a stand-alone app in the beginning helps us to get familiar with the topic and discover general pitfalls.

Decouple Logic and View
Ok, let me explain that. We build this stand-alone app in such a way, that we can reuse parts of it later in BackWPup Pro. So that means, the code, which is responsible for restoring a backup is not only build for this app but also for the plugin later. So we won』t have to rebuild everything in the near future when integrating it into BackWPup. We decouple the part, which handles the restoration from the part, which shows the GUI (Graphical User Interface) in browsers.

Settings for Log Files

Settings for Log Files

Settings for Log Files
Every time a BackWPup job is running, a log file is created. You can configure the log files under BackWPup → Settings → Logs.
Log Settings

Log file folder – here you can set the folder, where all logs are saved to. It can be an absolute path or a relative path to the wp-content folder. If you』re new to BackWPup, you can leave this setting as it is. It will be automatically generated.
Maximum log files – the maximum number of log files, which will be stored in the folder set above. Old files will be deleted.
Compression – usually log files will be saved uncompressed. If you wish, you can select the checkbox and the log files will be compressed with Gzip.
Logging Level – with this setting you can choose which kind of log file is generated. Usually the log logging level Normal will work for you. If you need support, it』s best to change it to Debug (not translated). For more information about this, read our article Sending in log files for the support. Log files can be translated, which means they will have the language you use in your WordPress installation. Choosing not translated, the log files will be saved in English.

If you click on the button Reset all settings to default, all settings will be restored to our recommended settings.

Which Backup Archive Format should I choose?

Which Backup Archive Format should I choose?

Which Backup Archive Format should I choose?
In this instruction we would like to explain all backup archive formats which are available in BackWPup and how you choose the fitting one for your backup.

Table of Contents

What is an archive?Where can I set up the backup archive format in BackWPup?What do the different archive formats mean?Links to software providers for zip archives
1. What is an archive?
Archives are files containing other files. Usually the single files are compressed in an archive. Normally the file name extension indicates which archive you used. It depends on the program with which they where created. When packed in an archive, related data stay together and you can copy or send them much faster.
We recommend beginners to use the backup archive format zip as it can be unpacked both on Linux and Windows systems. To be able to unpack an archive on your desktop, you should use e.g. WinZip, WinRar or 7zip.
2. Where can I set up the backup archive format in BackWPup?

Click BackWPup Pro (1) in the left menu. After that, click Add new job (2). There, choose the tab General (3).
Scroll down until you see Archive Format.
BackWPup offers 3 different archive formats: Zip, Tar and Tar GZip. Choose the one that fits most to your needs and scroll down to the end of the page.

After you made your settings, click on Save Changes.

3. What do the different archive formats mean?
We offer the backup archive formats zip, tar and tar gzip.
Zip
The zip file is the most common archive format. Zip files can be extended on several data carriers and can consist of a various number of compressed files. Mostly zip files are used when DOS / Windows is also used. When you need to exchange data between Linux and Windows systems, you should choose this format.
Compression rate: low
Duration of compression process: average
Tar
Archives with the ending 「tar」 are nothing but a group of files . The directory』s structure is stored, but the content isn』t compressed. Moreover all rights and the owner is stored in a tar archive. That』s why 「tar」 is the preferred archive format when working with Linux or Unix.
Compression rate: None
Duration of compression process: –
Tar GZip
A file with the ending 「tar.gz」 is a .tar file being compressed with gzip. Gzip can only compress one file.
Compression rate: average
Duration of compression process: average/high

File size cannot be retrieved. File might be too large…
If BackWPup displays the message
File size of 「%s」 cannot be retrieved. File might be too large and will not be added to queue.

then the backup folder contains a file that is too large for backing up.
Note: This error message points toward your server running with 32 bit PHP. Please upgrade PHP to the 64 bit version if possible. Contact your hosting provider for assistance. An upgrade to 64 bit should take care of the above problem.
With 32 bit PHP, files larger than 200 MB can cause a backup failure every time. Your other option – if you can』t upgrade to 64 bit PHP – is to either delete the file if it is no longer needed or to simply exclude it from the backup.
To exclude a file from your backup, go to BackWPup → Jobs via the backend, select the relevant job and click the Files tab. There you will find various options for excluding files.
Important: The tab 「Files」 will only be visible if you have previously indicated a backup of the files in the tab 「General」.

Warning: File name too long to be saved

Warning: File name too long to be saved

Warning: File name too long to be saved
In case you save files with the archive format Tar or TarGZ, it may happen that BackWPup reports the warning 「file name too long」.
The reason is that the formats Tar or TarGZ only allow 100 characters as file name lengths. Nonetheless, BackWPup saves files with longer names, but the archive format shortens the names. This may lead to problems during the restoring process.
Example:
WARNING: File name 「wp-content/plugins/bwp-minify/cache/minify_tagdiv_theme,commentreply.min,wpembed.min,js_composer_front._998cbd8e7258ea432e75c51c3cabf110.gz」 is too long to be saved correctly in TarGz archive!
In case you get the warning 「file name too long」, you should consider to do these steps:

Exclude folders like e.g. cache, temp, logs and backups from saving.

Choose zip as archive format

How to send backups via email

How to send backups via email

How to send backups via email
A simple method to store backups is to send the backup archive to your email inbox. However, this only works for smaller backups, as sending emails with huge attachments is not supported by most of the e-mail providers.
Follow these steps to set up email as backup destination:

Edit the backup job: under the General tab, in the Job Destination section, check the box Backup sent via email.
Edit the backup job under the General tab, in the Job Destination section
A new tab To: Email appears. Go to this tab.

Here you can set:

From name
Sending method, where you can choose from:

Use WordPress settings – tries to use the email settings configured in WordPress, which may be altered by plugins.
PHP mail() – uses the PHP function mail(). This method needs a lot of memory and is not recommended.
Sendmail – uses Sendmail. This requires the Sendmail path, it is detected from the PHP configuration by default.
SMTP – sends the email directly via the SMTP server. Get the SMTP credentials and fill them into the fields.

Via the button Send test email you can check if everything is set up correctly.

How to add S3 services programmatically

How to add S3 services programmatically

How to add S3 services programmatically
Starting from BackWPup version 3.6.10 is possible to add new S3 services to the default list through the filter hook backwpup_s3_destination.
Every service we need to add can be set via an array that specifies the label, the region and the url of the service we want to add.
Here below we set an example:
add_filter( 'backwpup_s3_destination', function ( $destinations ) {
return array_merge( array(array(
'label' => __( 'FirstServiceTest: AMS3', 'backwpup' ),
'region' => 'ams3',
'base_url' => 'https://example.com',
),
array(
'label' => __( 'SecondServiceTest: AMS', 'backwpup' ),
'region' => 'nl-ams',
'base_url' => 'https://example.com',
)
), $destinations );
} );
In this example we set two arrays, one for the FirstServiceTest and a second one for the SecondServiceTest.
These new services now will be available in the S3 service list for the related jobs.
